It’s been a couple of years now since we saw the first trailer for Joe Lynch’s Knights of Badassdom, a comedy about a group of LARPers who accidentally summon a demon and find themselves forced to take up arms against it. With a cast that includes Peter Dinklage, Summer Glau, Steve Zahn, Ryan Kwanten and Danny Pudi, the movie seemed destined to be an instant cult classic until a strange thing happened… it simply fell off the face of the Earth. Rumours swirled about one of the producers hijacking the movie away from Joe Lynch, re-editing it and then trying to sell it all on his own.

The good news is that the movie has finally found a home with Entertainment One and it will get a release in early 2014. The bad news is that this is not Joe Lynch’s cut of the movie and based on the new teaser trailer they have released, some of the post-production work looks questionable at best. Knights of Badassdom will play theatrically starting on Jan. 21st through Tugg and then go the VOD route on Feb. 11th. Check out the new teaser trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Although the past few years haven’t been particularly great ones for Gerard Butler, the surprise success of Olympus Has Fallen has at least restored his status as a semi-reliable action star. This led to a handful of projects being offered to him in 2013 including sci-fi actioner The Raven, Alex Proyas’ Gods of Egypt and the Kane & Lynch movie (not to mention the upcoming Olympus Has Fallensequel, London Has Fallen). Now it looks like he has landed another high profile role in the upcoming Point Break remake. Butler is in talks to play Bodhi, the same character played in the original film by the late Patrick Swayze. Hit the jump for more details.

According to THR, Gerard Butler is in final negotiations to star in Alcon’s remake of Point Break. The movie is set to be directed by Ericson Core (Invincible) from a script by Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium, Law Abiding Citizen). The role of undercover FBI agent Johnny Utah, played by Keanu Reeves in the original, has yet to be cast.

I guess I can see why Gerard Butler would be cast in the Bodhi role, especially after starring in the surfing drama Chasing Mavericks, but I’m still not clear on whether or not the bad guys are actually surfers in the remake. They keep saying that this new version is “set in the international world of extreme sports” which sounds pretty terrible. Either way, Butler clearly does not have have the same charisma as Swayze but hey, who does? Do you think Gerard Butler can pull off a decent Bodhi? Who would you like to see as the new Johnny Utah?

After nearly a month of speculation about how they might handle the death of Paul Walker in the upcoming Fast & Furious 7, it seems that director James Wan and writers Chris Morgan and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum have finally come to a decision. It was recently announced that the movie would be pushed back to April 2015, giving them time to do rewrites and reshoots if necessary. Although there were some reports that they might scrap the whole movie and start over again, I think we all knew that was pretty unlikely. We are now hearing that they will salvage as much of the existing footage as possible and that Paul Walker’s character will not actually die in the movie. Obviously this seems like the ideal solution, but can it still make sense in the context of the entire film?

According to THR, the new plan is not to kill off Brian O’Conner in Fast & Furious 7, but rather to “retire” him. It’s unclear just exactly what that means but their goal was to “tweak the existing script so that Walker would remain a part of the story but could be written out, allowing the franchise to continue without him.” Some additional scenes will need to be written and shot, but there does not appear to be any need for stand-ins or CG work.

Although the exact details are still unknown, in theory, this feels like the most tactful and practical way to handle the situation. That being said, it really depends on how much flexibility the existing footage affords them. It would be unfortunate if they had to rely completely on other characters to explain everything that Walker’s character does. Do you think this sounds like the right way to go? How do you think they will explain the departure of Brian O’Conner in Fast & Furious 7?

Ridley Scott is certainly no stranger to the concept of director’s cuts and extended cuts; in fact, many credit him with popularizing the practice for better or worse. As it currently stands, at least eight of his films (maybe more) have been re-released in an alternate version of some sort, many of them seen as being superior to the original theatrical cut. With the chilly reception given to his latest film, The Counselor, this past October, you had to assume that there would be a new version of this on the way as well. Well, as it turns out, a longer cut of the film has just been announced this week, although it’s worth noting that it is not a “director’s cut.” Hit the jump for more details.

According to a press release from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, The Counselor is coming to DVD and Blu-ray Combo on February 11th. The Blu-ray release will include both the theatrical version of the film and a new unrated extended cut. The press release lists the extended cut as being 220 minutes long (3 hours 40 minutes), but before you get too excited / horrified, it seems likely that this includes some extra making-of footage that is also unrated. Further investigation indicates that the extended cut is 138 minutes long, which means we will still get 20 minutes of additional scenes.

Many people have already made comparisons between Cormac McCarthy’s screenplay for The Counselor and the final film, pointing out that there is plenty of additional insanity that we never got to see on screen as well as some additional clarity. Could this extended version of the film change some people’s minds about it or will it just make it more unbearable? I’m not sure, but I know I’m definitely looking forward to seeing it. Will you be watching the extended cut of Ridley Scott’s The Counselor?

With the first weekend of 2014 now officially out of the way, Dimension Films have not wasted any time planting a flag in the first weekend of next year. The horror movie that they have chosen to kick off the 2015 movie season will be a reboot of The Amityville Horror series entitled simply Amityville. Although it may seem like this announcement came out of nowhere, they have had a new Amityville movie in development for years now under the title The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes. As you can probably guess, it was going to be a found footage film but it completely fell off the map, leaving many to assume it had been cancelled. Now it has been resurrected under a different title with the same writer/director team still attached. The plot synopsis is as follows:

“An ambitious female television news intern, on the verge of breaking the most famous haunted house case in the world, leads a team of journalists, clergymen and paranormal researchers into an investigation of the bizarre events that will come to be known as The Amityville Horror… only to unwittingly open a door to the unreal that she may never be able to close.”

Amityville will be written and directed by Casey La Scala and Daniel Farrands with Jason Blum on board as producer. La Scala doesn’t have a ton of credits to his name aside from the skateboarding comedy Grind and an upcoming horror thriller called The Remaining, but Farrands wrote the screenplay for Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers and directed a handful of horror-related documentaries including Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy and Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th.

It remains to be seen if Dimension will actually follow through with the project this time around. They had previously scheduled the movie for January 3rd, 2014 but then simply sat on it for a year. What do you think, is The Amityville Horror due for another reboot? Can the found footage format bring something new to the franchise?

When I saw people promoting yet anotherKickstarter campaign to make a modern grindhouse film set in the ’80s, I kind of thought I had reached my limit. Although I had a great time with Hobo with a Shotgun, The FP andManborg (among others), each one has seemed progressively less unique and inspired. That being said, now that I have seen the trailer forKung Fury, I am starting to realize that these movies are my kryptonite and I am willing to give this one a shot too.

Kung Fury is the brainchild of Swedish director David Sandberg who has a background in commercials and music videos. The story revolves around a kung fu cop from the ’80s who goes back in time to kill Hitler, only to find himself stranded in the age of Vikings. They’ve shot a good chunk of the movie already but they are seeking the funding to make it feature-length. Clearly it is a labour of love, so if you’re a fan of ’80s cinema and pop culture, you might want to give this a look. Check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

After a couple of slow weeks, the DVD and Blu-ray release calendar is finally starting to pick up again. Unfortunately, the two biggest titles this week are a couple of box office duds: Runner Runner starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake and Closed Circuit starring Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall. The good news is that there are a handful of indie releases that make up for it including Pedro Almodovar’s I’m So Excited!, Jim Mickle’s latest horror film We Are What We Are, and one of the best documentaries of the year, The Act of Killing. Jane Campion’s acclaimed mini-series Top of the Lake is also out this week along with season 4 of Archer and The Wicker Man: Final Cut on Blu-ray. What will you be buying or renting this week? Check out the full list of new releases after the jump.

It’s taken about five years, but this week it appears that a sequel to the Kevin James comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop is finally in the works over at Sony Pictures. Back in 2009, moviegoers were treated to a showdown between dueling mall cop movies as Paul Blartfaced off against Jody Hill’s Observe and Reportstarring Seth Rogen. The latter was a dark comedy that divided audiences and critics, earning just $26 million worldwide, but Blart was a surprise hit that went on to make over $180 million. In fact, it was the 19th highest grossing movie of the year in the U.S., which is why it seems crazy that it has taken this long for a sequel to get off the ground. Perhaps the success of Grown Ups 2 has convinced Sony execs that comedy sequels can be quite lucrative after all.

According to THR, Andy Fickman is in talks to direct a proposed sequel to Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Fickman is best known for directing the Dwayne Johnson flicks The Game Plan and Race to Witch Mountain for Disney, although his most recent movie was Parental Guidance starring Billy Crystal and Bette Midler. It sounds like he will be a perfect fit for this kind of tame, inoffensive comedy.

Although original director Steve Carr (Daddy Day Care, Dr. Doolittle 2) won’t be returning, both Kevin James and his co-writer Nick Bakay (Zookeeper) will be back to pen the script. Adam Sandler will produce through his Happy Madison banner with an April start date being planned. So what do you think… are you psyched for a Paul Blart sequel or what?

Surprise, surprise… it looks like Kevin Smith won’t be retiring from filmmaking anytime soon after all. His latest project, the low budget horror flick Tusk, seems to have reinvigorated him and led him to the realization that there are certain kinds of movies that he excels at. He is now determined to keep making movies but only unique, fiercely independent films that have his DNA in them. As he puts it, “from now until I drop dead, I’m only ever gonna make a flick that only I would/could ever make.” With Tuskcurrently in post-production, he is now hard at work on another script that seems equally absurd. The project is a called Helena Handbagand it involves humanity teaming up with Satan to battle a “rapturing giant Jesus.” Oh, one other thing: it’s going to be a musical.

According to a recent blog post, just like Tusk, Helena Handbag is also based on an episode of the SModcast (episode #52: The (C)Rapture, to be exact). The plot “concerns mankind teaming up with Hell to save existence from extinction at the hands of a Rapturing giant Jesus.” But considering thatTusk was shot for just $2 million, he needed to find a way to keep the budget for this movie relatively low as well.

His solution was to make it a musical instead, inspired by his love for Trey Parker and Matt Stone’sThe Book of Mormon. He is now in the process of planning it for the stage, although it’s possible that he might eventually bring it to the screen in some form as well. Either way, Smith seems fairly confident that he can simply whip together some songs in the shower… because hey, he’s a marginally-straight 43 year old fat man who has always loved show tunes! He is still planning to shoot Clerks III in May followed by Hit Somebody, so it’s still unclear when we might see Helena Handbag. Are you interested in seeing a Kevin Smith musical?

Although the director and main star of Rise of the Planet of the Apes will not be returning for its sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, 20th Century Fox looks to be taking measures to prevent the same thing from happening with the next installment in the series. Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) landed the directing gig for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes after Rupert Wyatt dropped out of the sequel last September. (The reason for his departure was that he didn’t think they had enough time to hit the May 2014 release date, but ironically, the movie is now hitting theatres on July 11th.) At any rate, it would seem that Fox is happy with what Reeves has done because they have just locked him in to direct the third film in the series as well.

According to Deadline, Matt Reeves has signed on to direct the third, as-of-yet untitled installment in the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise. This time around he will write the script himself with the help of Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard, Total Recall), who did the final rewrite on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. It would likely be Reeves’ next film since the third installment is said to be a priority for the studio.

In theory this sounds like good news, although we won’t know for sure until we get to see the next movie. The one downside is that it means another interesting director is getting tied down by a major blockbuster franchise. Reeves was previously attached to direct a handful of other intriguing genre flicks including vampire film The Passage, classic horror reinvention This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein, and a movie based on 8 O’Clock in the Morning, the same short story that inspired They Live. Are you happy to see Matt Reeves return to the Planet of the Apes?

Looks like another classic horror movie is about to get remade, but before you get too worked up about it, let me just point out that this is only a TV adaptation we’re talking about. Roman Polanski’s 1968 supernatural thriller Rosemary’s Baby is being turned into a four-hour mini-series for NBC, although as we’ve come to expect, they seem to be promoting it more as a new adaptation of the original novel than a remake of the iconic film. The story, of course, revolves around a young couple who move into a new apartment in Paris only to notice strange occurrences after the woman becomes pregnant. She starts to become suspicious of their mysterious neighbours and increasingly paranoid about the safety of her unborn child. Mia Farrow played Rosemary in the original film and now this week it has been announced that Zoe Saldana will take on the lead role the new mini-series.

According to THR, Zoe Saldana will star in the new Rosemary’s Baby mini-series for NBC. The project is being produced by Lionsgate TV and will be directed by Agnieszka Holland (Europa Europa, The Wire). Scott Abbott (Queen of the Damned) and James Wong (Final Destination,American Horror Story) are on board to write the screenplay.

While some people seem to find it offensive that they have chosen an African-American woman for the lead role, I really don’t understand that point of view. Having starred in some of the most successful blockbusters of the past few years (Avatar, Star Trek), clearly Saldana is a big name that brings credibility to a TV project that could otherwise be easily dismissed.

Granted, TV seems to be the new medium of choice for horror remakes with the success of shows like Hannibal and Bates Motel, and even The Exorcist is now being turned into a TV series. This isn’t the first time Rosemary’s Baby has made it to the small screen, either; back in 1976, ABC aired a made-for-TV sequel called Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby. Are you interested in seeing Rosemary’s Baby retold as a mini-series? Do you think Zoe Saldana is a decent choice to star?

Director Mark Romanek seems to be well on his way to becoming the next Terence Malick as the elusive filmmaker has directed just two movies in the last 12 years. This despite being offered quite a few big projects as of late including The Wolfman, Disney’s live-actionCinderella and Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol. Ultimately none of these project panned out for Romanek and although he did direct the pilot forLocke & Key, Fox decided to pass on the TV series as well. Fortunately it looks like Romanek is now in the process of lining up another gig and it could be a good fit for his sensibilities. The movie is a true crime drama based on the story of one of the most notorious serial killers in U.S. history: the Boston Strangler.

According to Variety, Mark Romanek is currently in talks to direct Boston Strangler for Warner Brothers. The studio acquired the pitch in late 2012 with Casey Affleck attached to star as one of the detectives who was a part of the so-called “Strangler Squad.” (Imagine that, an Affleck starring in a movie based in Boston!) This won’t be the first time the Boston Strangler has been seen on screen; most notably, Richard Fleischer directed The Boston Strangler starring Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda back in 1968.

The script for the new film was written by fellow Bostonite Chuck Maclean (Bridges On The Fort Point Channel) and it is described as being similar in tone to David Fincher’s Seven and Zodiac. Those would seem to be obvious watermarks for any serial killer flick nowadays, but it will be interesting to see what Romanek can bring to the mix. His 2002 directorial debut, One Hour Photo, featured Robin Williams as a creepy photo lab technician who becomes obsessed with one of his customers. Do you think Mark Romanek is a good choice to direct a new Boston Strangler movie?

As we brave the winter wasteland of January and February, we can always keep ourselves warm with the thought of what lies ahead in 2014. It hasn’t taken long for people to start discussing their most anticipated movies of the year and there definitely looks to be some interesting stuff on the horizon. Many of last year’s big blockbusters were disappointments, but there is a feeling that some of this year’s summer movies could actually deliver. In addition, there are new movies to look forward to from directors like Christopher Nolan, Wes Anderson, Lars Von Trier, Darren Aronofsky and P.T. Anderson. What’s not to like? Obviously we can’t include every 2014 movie on this poll (and many don’t have official release dates yet) but go ahead and cast your vote, then feel free to list off the other movies you are looking forward to in the comments below.

Now that’s been delayed — AMD sent out a public statement to journalists notifying them that the API is “now targeting a January release.” Given the state of BF4, this is scarcely surprising.

One-hit kill bugs, incorrect matchmaking, loss of progress in the single-player campaign, and a number of other persistent problems led Dice to declare it was suspending all work on DLC and other projects to focus exclusively on stabilizing the game. Part of what complicates the situation is that many of these issues aren’t unique to a single platform, but each platform has its own system for patching the game. With five platforms to repair (PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC) it’s not surprising to see the Mantle deployment shifting into January.

Overall, it makes more sense to fix BF4 for everyone than to push out a GPU update that improves performance in a game people can’t or don’t want to play. AMD customers are just one part of the total number of Battlefield 4 players, and Dice has to prioritize improving the game for the greatest number of people first and foremost. When Mantle does drop, it’s expected to significantly improve performance across AMD’s entire APU and GPU product line thanks to a new, close-to-metal approach to GPU programming.

Mantle, in essence, strips out some of the abstraction that DX11 provides, in favor of emphasizing speed. It allows for far more draw calls and, according to AMD, will better leverage multi-core CPUs. Estimates on performance improvements have varied; the final results here will depend significantly on how the game engine is architected. Since DX11 games are built around the idea of limiting draw calls, supporting Mantle optimally will require some changes to the underlying structure of the game. Still, it seems reasonably to think Mantle could offer a 15-20% improvement in overall game performance — and that’s enough to make a meaningful difference for AMD’s gaming market.

BF4 is still expected to be the first shipping Mantle title. Thus far, Star Citizen, Thief, andPlants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare have all been explicitly confirmed as supporting Mantle. It’s been implied that Mantle support will ship natively with all Frostbite-powered titles, including Dragon Age: Inquisition, Star Wars, the Need for Speed series, and the upcomingMass Effect game that’s still in development.

A quick look at the Battlefield 4 Control Room indicates that a number of the major problems have been fixed, though multiple issues are still listed as “Under investigation.” If Dice can finish patching the game by early this month, it should still be possible to roll Mantle out by the end of January.

As you can probably guess, it’s been a slow couple of weeks for new releases on DVD and Blu-ray since both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve happened to fall on a Tuesday this year. However, there are still a few major releases in stores worth mentioning including Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut, Don Jon, and James Wan’s second horror hit of the year, Insidious: Chapter 2. The last Film Junk poll of 2013 ran for a little longer than usual, but it made for a pretty epic battle as three great films vied for the title of Best Coen Brothers Movie. In the end, The Dude’s rabid cult following gave The Big Lebowski the edge over No Country for Old Men as it claimed the top spot by just a handful of votes. Fargo wasn’t far behind in third place while Miller’s Crossing and O Brother, Where Art Thou? rounded out the top 5. Almost all of the remaining films pulled in at least a few votes with the exception of Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers which were both completely shut out. It would be interesting to see where Inside Llewyn Davis fits into this list once everyone has had a chance to see it. Do you agree with these results?

It’s going to be a few more days before we get around to recording our year end podcast and revealing our own favourite films of 2013, but in the meantime I thought we should take a look at the best movies of the year according to Film Junk’s many discerning readers and listeners. Although we narrowed down the options for you in most of the various categories, it’s worth noting that the votes for best and worst movie of the year were completely open-ended. Perhaps the biggest surprise this year was a two-way tie for Best Action Movie, but many of the other categories were not as close as I expected them to be. Whether or not you think it was a bad year for cinema, I guess this partially proves that there wasn’t a lot of depth to this year’s crop of movies. What do you think about this year’s winners? Are you in sync with your fellow Film Junkies? Check out the final results after the jump.
The company's first candy bar was called the "Kandy Kake". The product was not overwhelmingly successful, so Curtiss went about refashioning it. And, in 1920, the "Baby Ruth" candy bar was introduced to candy-craving consumers.

That would be a pretty simple story, if it ended there. But, of course, it didn't. Adults and kids back then, just like today, were confused by the name and thought it was a candy bar related to Babe Ruth. After all, even in 1921, Babe already had gained a lot of fame in the baseball world. He had hit 54 home runs in 1920 and 59 during the 1921 season. These were incredible records at the time and he was in newspapers all over the country.

So, for many, Baby Ruth was Babe Ruth's candy, whether truth or not. Kids around the country purportedly sent the Babe their Baby Ruth candy bar wrappers in hopes of getting his signature.

Despite widespread popular opinion that the candy bar was named after the Babe, the Curtiss Candy Company never swayed from its position that it was named in honor of Cleveland's daughter Ruth.

But...as many commentators have observed, Ruth died of diptheria in 1904, seventeen years "before Curtiss combined nougat, chocolate, caramel and peanuts into its chewy Baby Ruth." Moreover, Grover Cleveland left office in 1897, and, by the time the Baby Ruth bar hit the market in 1920, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, and William Howard Taft had all served as president, and Woodrow Wilson was just finishing his second term.

So why would the Curtiss Company name its candy bar after a long-deceased daughter of a former president? Well, many people believed that the company conveniently concocted the story to avoid having to pay royalties to Babe Ruth, which, if true, would have been very unfair and illegal.

Whatever the case may be, the story doesn't end there. In 1926, Babe agreed to lend his name to a new candy bar called "Ruth's Home Run Candy Bar" that was manufactured by the fledgling George H. Ruth Candy Company. In response, the Curtiss Company filed a lawsuit to prevent the rival candy bar from being made, claiming that it infringed on their trademark established in 1919.

In 1931, the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals ruled in favor of the Curtiss Company and George Ruth's Home Run Bar was forced off the market. His first term was 1885-1889 and his second term was 1893-1897 which means he was the 22nd and 24th president of the United States. So that's why President Obama is the 44th president even though there have only been 43 different presidents to date!
