Tuesday Afternoon Box Office Report: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Still Smoldering

The final weekend of 2013 didn’t offer many surprises at the box office as audiences continued to flock to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Frozen, while most of the Christmas Day releases failed to make much of an impact. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug retained the box office title for the third week in a row (Gravity being the only other 2013 movie to achieve this), while Disney’s Frozen is now the seventh highest grossing movie of the year and continuing to climb. Clearly both movies have capitalized on the fact that they are the only real family-friendly options in theatres. Anchorman 2 fell to #3 while American Hustle remained in fourth and The Wolf of Wall Street was the only new release to crack the top 5. Elsewhere, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty had a disappointing debut while 47 RoninGrudge Match and Justin Bieber: Believe all bombed in increasingly more spectacular fashion.
