Kevin Smith Announces Apocalyptic Musical Helena Handbag

Surprise, surprise… it looks like Kevin Smith won’t be retiring from filmmaking anytime soon after all. His latest project, the low budget horror flick Tusk, seems to have reinvigorated him and led him to the realization that there are certain kinds of movies that he excels at. He is now determined to keep making movies but only unique, fiercely independent films that have his DNA in them. As he puts it, “from now until I drop dead, I’m only ever gonna make a flick that only I would/could ever make.” With Tuskcurrently in post-production, he is now hard at work on another script that seems equally absurd. The project is a called Helena Handbagand it involves humanity teaming up with Satan to battle a “rapturing giant Jesus.” Oh, one other thing: it’s going to be a musical.
According to a recent blog post, just like TuskHelena Handbag is also based on an episode of the SModcast (episode #52: The (C)Rapture, to be exact). The plot “concerns mankind teaming up with Hell to save existence from extinction at the hands of a Rapturing giant Jesus.” But considering thatTusk was shot for just $2 million, he needed to find a way to keep the budget for this movie relatively low as well.
His solution was to make it a musical instead, inspired by his love for Trey Parker and Matt Stone’sThe Book of Mormon. He is now in the process of planning it for the stage, although it’s possible that he might eventually bring it to the screen in some form as well. Either way, Smith seems fairly confident that he can simply whip together some songs in the shower… because hey, he’s a marginally-straight 43 year old fat man who has always loved show tunes! He is still planning to shoot Clerks III in May followed by Hit Somebody, so it’s still unclear when we might see Helena Handbag. Are you interested in seeing a Kevin Smith musical?
