Mark Romanek to Direct Boston Strangler Starring Casey Affleck

Director Mark Romanek seems to be well on his way to becoming the next Terence Malick as the elusive filmmaker has directed just two movies in the last 12 years. This despite being offered quite a few big projects as of late including The Wolfman, Disney’s live-actionCinderella and Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol. Ultimately none of these project panned out for Romanek and although he did direct the pilot forLocke & Key, Fox decided to pass on the TV series as well. Fortunately it looks like Romanek is now in the process of lining up another gig and it could be a good fit for his sensibilities. The movie is a true crime drama based on the story of one of the most notorious serial killers in U.S. history: the Boston Strangler.
According to Variety, Mark Romanek is currently in talks to direct Boston Strangler for Warner Brothers. The studio acquired the pitch in late 2012 with Casey Affleck attached to star as one of the detectives who was a part of the so-called “Strangler Squad.” (Imagine that, an Affleck starring in a movie based in Boston!) This won’t be the first time the Boston Strangler has been seen on screen; most notably, Richard Fleischer directed The Boston Strangler starring Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda back in 1968.
The script for the new film was written by fellow Bostonite Chuck Maclean (Bridges On The Fort Point Channel) and it is described as being similar in tone to David Fincher’s Seven and Zodiac. Those would seem to be obvious watermarks for any serial killer flick nowadays, but it will be interesting to see what Romanek can bring to the mix. His 2002 directorial debut, One Hour Photo, featured Robin Williams as a creepy photo lab technician who becomes obsessed with one of his customers. Do you think Mark Romanek is a good choice to direct a new Boston Strangler movie?
