Zoe Saldana to Star in Rosemary’s Baby Remake

Looks like another classic horror movie is about to get remade, but before you get too worked up about it, let me just point out that this is only a TV adaptation we’re talking about. Roman Polanski’s 1968 supernatural thriller Rosemary’s Baby is being turned into a four-hour mini-series for NBC, although as we’ve come to expect, they seem to be promoting it more as a new adaptation of the original novel than a remake of the iconic film. The story, of course, revolves around a young couple who move into a new apartment in Paris only to notice strange occurrences after the woman becomes pregnant. She starts to become suspicious of their mysterious neighbours and increasingly paranoid about the safety of her unborn child. Mia Farrow played Rosemary in the original film and now this week it has been announced that Zoe Saldana will take on the lead role the new mini-series.
According to THR, Zoe Saldana will star in the new Rosemary’s Baby mini-series for NBC. The project is being produced by Lionsgate TV and will be directed by Agnieszka Holland (Europa EuropaThe Wire). Scott Abbott (Queen of the Damned) and James Wong (Final Destination,American Horror Story) are on board to write the screenplay.
While some people seem to find it offensive that they have chosen an African-American woman for the lead role, I really don’t understand that point of view. Having starred in some of the most successful blockbusters of the past few years (AvatarStar Trek), clearly Saldana is a big name that brings credibility to a TV project that could otherwise be easily dismissed.
Granted, TV seems to be the new medium of choice for horror remakes with the success of shows like Hannibal and Bates Motel, and even The Exorcist is now being turned into a TV series. This isn’t the first time Rosemary’s Baby has made it to the small screen, either; back in 1976, ABC aired a made-for-TV sequel called Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby. Are you interested in seeing Rosemary’s Baby retold as a mini-series? Do you think Zoe Saldana is a decent choice to star?
